3D Printing: Threaded Funnel & Oil Cap

Today’s post is a quick post about a 3D Printed project that I did on a lunch break not too long ago. One of my friends sent me a picture of a funnel that screws into the oil cap for his Toyota. He asked me if I could model it and I told him that it wouldn’t be a problem at all. A few days later, I had a free lunch break and took a stab at designing and 3D printing a funnel that would screw into the oil cap port on the valve cover (go to the end of this post to download the file). Below is what I came up with:

My CAD Model for the Funnel

The funnel is a simple design that can be 3D printed with no supports and allows you to screw the funnel into the valve cover to avoid spills. Once screwed in, the funnel can support an entire quart of oil on its own, as shown on my car:

No hands!

Here’s a good product shot the same friend took while I used it to add oil to his car:

Oil Cap

Since I had already modeled the threads, I thought it would be fun to design an oil cap as well. I planned to machine this out of aluminum, anodize it (red/blue) and then laser etch it, but I need to buy an indexer for my Bridgeport to get it done correctly. This is the model that I came up with:

I went ahead and 3D printed it in resin and with FDM:

And then I rendered it in my CAD to see what it would look like anodized, and laser etched:

The funnel .STL can be found here, and the oil cap will not be made available since I don’t want people assuming that they can use any material to print their own oil cap. I would recommend printing the oil funnel in PETG. If I end up purchasing the equipment to make these oil caps, I will add a store page to this website.
